February 2001.
Roros is a market town some 100
miles south of Trondhiem. The area is on a plateau about 2000
feet above sea level with several mountains rising a further 1000
feet or so.
Our visit coincided with the annual
Rorosmartnan week, so the town was very busy with crowds of people
visiting to view the many stalls that were set up in the town
streets. One day we hope to return as there are many things we
did not see on our short visit. We were introduced to several
local people all of whom made us feel very welcome.
We stayed in the hamlet of Vika
about 10 miles from town. The nearest shop is at Glamos 3 miles
away. There was plenty of snow most days.
The two bedroom log cabin at Vika,
described to us as a hut, in the lovely Norwegian mountain region
near to Roros.
Comfortably furnished with plenty
of easy chairs, dining, cooking areas and two bedrooms. Electric
wall heaters and a large wood burning stove.
The wood shed.
Imagine the scene at 3 am. when
you have difficulty opening the front door of the hut because
of the drifted snow. Now it's 8am and -10c.
An interesting loo in the wood shed
with electric light and within easy walking distance of the front
door.
View across the lake with our hut
just visible in the trees on right.
On the way to the Martnan, several
of the visitors travelled this way over the frozen lake and on
to town.
When we arrived there was not a
lot of snow, however after several days of snow it looked like
this.
We are just so grateful to Jan and
Alan for all the work they did to find, and arrange for our comfortable
stay in this hut. We had a wonderful time thanks to their efforts.
